Nov. 13, 2009
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Five Hoosiers scored in double-digits as the Indiana women's basketball team defeated Memphis, 78-74, on the road, recording the program's 600th win all-time. Junior Jori Davis led all players with 21 points and sophomore Sasha Chaplin collected her first double-double of the season with 13 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.
"It's never easy on the road," said Indiana head coach Felisha Legette-Jack. "We're both two young teams. One thing I loved about our team is that we stayed focused until the end and were able to get to that next pass and that next play, and keep our focus on what we can control."
With the Tigers (0-1) leading 15-14 at the 12:34 mark, Davis put in a layup to spark a 21-9 IU run and put the Hoosiers up, 37-26, with 4:05 left in the first half. However, the Tigers fought back and outscored Indiana, 12-6, in the final four minutes of the half to come within six, 43-37, at the break.
Chaplin got the Hoosiers on the board first in the second half as she put in a layup at 19:34 to increase Indiana's lead to eight, 37-45. The Tigers used a 9-4 run to cut IU's lead to three, 49-46, with 15:36 on the clock. The Hoosiers regained a nine-point edge, but Memphis kept fighting back as it put together a 26-8 run to take a 73-68 lead with 2:41 left to go in the game. A three-point play, followed by a jumper by Braun gave Indiana a one-point lead, 74-73, with 1:04 to play. A free throw by UM's Brittany Carter knotted the score for the seventh time in the game, 74-74, but a three-point play from junior Whitney Lindsay kept the Hoosiers with the lead as they came away with the 78-74 triumph.
Davis sank 8-of-19 from the field, including a pair of free throws, and added nine boards and one steal on the night. Chaplin shot 6-of-7 from the field and added a free throw to go along with three blocked shots and two assists.
