Indiana Falls to No. 22 Xavier, 62-59, in Second Round of Preseason WNIT

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Senior All-America candidate Whitney Thomas recorded her 23rd career double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds, but the Indiana women's basketball team fell in a close battle to No. 22 Xavier, 62-59, in the second round of the Preseason WNIT.
Thomas also recorded two blocked shots and two assists. Sophomore Jori Davis led the Hoosiers (1-1) with 13 points, senior Amber Jackson added 12 points and sophomore Whitney Lindsay scored 10 points and added two assists and two steals in the effort.
The Hoosiers opened the game with a 6-0 score by way of Davis who nailed a 3-pointer at the 18:48 mark and added a free throw and a layup within the next minute. Special Jennings put Xavier (2-0) on the board with a trey at the 16:39 mark. Another free throw from Davis sparked a 15-5 Indiana run at the 16:16 mark that gave the Hoosiers a 13-point advantage, 21-8, with 10:26 remaining in the first half. However, the Musketeers battled back as Ta'Shia Phillips put in a layup to ignite a 15-5 Xavier run and cut IU's lead to three, 26-23, with 1:50 to go. A 3-pointer from Jamie Braun followed by a layup and a pair of free throws by Jackson sent the Hoosiers into the break with a 33-27 lead.
Indiana struck first in the second half with a jumper from Kim Roberson at the 19:03 mark to increase the Hoosiers' lead eight, 35-27. But Xavier used three straight 3-pointers to take a 36-35 lead with 16:54 on the clock. Jackson used a hook shot to regain a one-point edge for the Hoosiers. A pair of free throws by Thomas at the 15:49 mark upped the IU advantage to 39-36, but the Musketeers answered again with a layup from Phillips to come back within one, 39-38. A layup from Thomas with 15:02 on the clock increased IU's lead back to 41-38, but another 3-pointer from Tudy Reed tied the game at 41 apiece. Another 3-pointer, this time from Dee Dee Jernigan put Xavier back on top, 44-41, with 14:08 remaining in the game. Thomas converted a three-point play with 12:53 to go, and knot the game at 44-44, but Xavier answered again with a 3-pointer from Jerri Taylor to regain a three-point lead, 47-44.
The two teams went to trade the lead five more times, before Xavier came away with the 62-59 win.
The Hoosiers dominated the boards, 40-35, and committed just eight turnovers to the Musketeer's 13. IU shot 35.7 percent (20-of-56) from the field, 38.5 percent (5-of-13) from the 3-point line and 66.7 percent (14-of-21) from the free throw line.
Xavier's Phillips also recorded a double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds. Taylor led all players with 15 points. Reed added 13 points, while Jennings scored 11 points and recorded a game-high four assists.
