Hoosiers Fall to Middle Tennessee State, 65-59, in Final Preseason WNIT Game

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Four Hoosiers reached double-digit points but it wasn't enough as Middle Tennessee defeated Indiana, 65-59, on Saturday, Nov. 22 at the Murphy Center in the two team's final Preseason WNIT game.
Junior Jamie Braun scored a team-high 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field to go along with six steals and five assists. Senior Kim Roberson added 14 points, four steals, four rebounds and three assists, while sophomore Jori Davis and senior Amber Jackson each scored 10 points a piece.
With just a one point lead, 11-10 at the 12:04 mark, the Hoosiers put together a 19-0 run to take a 30-10 lead with 6:16 remaining in the first half by way of eight points from Braun. At the 6:02 mark, MTSU's Chelsea Lymon nailed back-to-back 3-pointers, which was the Blue Raiders first baskets since the 12:04 mark. IU answered on a layup from Braun with 4:32 left in the half to increase Indiana's lead to 32-16. The Blue Raiders matched the Hoosiers 4-4 in the closing minutes of the half taking advantage at the free throw line. A steal by Lymon at the 20-second mark resulted in a layup and the last basket of the half as the two teams went into the break with Indiana leading, 36-22.
Braun sank a perfect 6-of-6 from the floor in the first half for 14 points, while Indiana held Middle Tennessee to just 26 percent (7-of-27) shooting from the floor for the half.
Both teams came out of the halftime break shooting a little cold from the floor. The first basket of the second stanza didn't come until the 18:11 mark when MTSU's Brandi Brown nailed a 3-pointer to cut IU's lead to 36-25. That 3 sparked a 15-4 Blue Raider run that brought the home team within three, 40-37, with 13:24 left in the game. Another 3-pointer by Brown at the 12:35 mark knotted the game at 40-40. The tied score didn't last long as Lymon sank a trey to give Middle Tennessee a 43-40 lead, its first of the game, with 11:39 to go. A pair of free throws by Amber Jackson brought the Hoosiers back within one, 43-42, but Anne Marie Lanning hit a jumper to maintain a 3-point advantage for the Blue Raiders with 10:25 on the clock.
A three-point play by Kim Roberson tied the Hoosiers back up with MTSU, 45-45. A steal and a fastbreak layup by Roberson gave the Hoosiers lead back, 47-45, with 9:02 to go. But another 3-pointer by Lanning at the 8:19 mark gave Middle Tennessee the one-point edge, 48-47. MTSU's Alysha Clark put together a three-point play of her own to give the Blue Raiders a 51-47 lead. The Hoosiers answered on a layup by Jori Davis to cut Middle Tennessee's lead to two, 51-49, but Clark scored again to regain a four-point lead for her squad, 53-49, with 5:31 to go in the game. With 5:15 on the clock, Davis sank a jumper, while Roberson followed with her second and-one to give IU a one-point advantage, 54-53.
The two teams traded the lead for the final three and half minutes before Middle Tennessee State took the 65-59 win.
Indiana shot 52.1 percent (25-of-48) from the floor on the game, but were outrebounded 38-27. The Hoosiers held Middle Tennessee to 37.5 percent (21-of-56) shooting from the field, but the Blue Raiders sank 11 3-pointers to IU's one.
The Hoosiers continue their five game road trip on Tuesday, Nov. 25 when they visit the Missouri Tigers in Columbia. Tip-off against Mizzou is set for 7:30 p.m. ET.
