Florida State Slips by Hoosiers in Big Ten/ACC Challenge, 85-78

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Sophomore Jamie Braun recorded her first double-double of the season with 16 points and 11 rebounds, but it wasn't enough as the Indiana women's basketball team fell to No. 21/22 Florida State, 85-78, in Assembly Hall on Friday, Nov. 30 in the inaugural Big Ten/ACC Women's Basketball Challenge.
The Hoosiers (4-3) opened the first half taking a 9-3 lead within the first three and half minutes. The Seminoles (6-1) came roaring back on a 9-4 run to take a 14-13 lead with 12:24 on the clock. A jumper by Braun put the Hoosiers back up by one, 15-14, with 11:43 to go in the half. However, Florida State answered on layup by Cayla Moore as the two teams traded the lead until the 5:15 mark when Indiana used a 10-3 run to take a 37-28 lead with 3:03 to go. A pair of free throws from Antionnette Howard, followed by a jumper by Mara Freshour, cut IU's lead to five, 37-32, but back-to-back jumpers by Braun increased the Hoosier advantage to 41-32, with 1:16 on the clock. Free throws by Shante Williams and a 3-pointer by Howard at the buzzer sent the two teams into the break with IU leading, 41-37.
Whitney Thomas put IU on the board first in the second half to increase the lead to six, 43-37, at the 19:45 mark, but a 16-10 Florida State run gave the Seminoles a one point lead, 54-53, with 12:02 remaining in the game. The Seminoles used a 14-7 run, sparked by a Jacinta Monroe layup, to increased their advantage to eight, 68-60, with 7:28 to go. A 17-12 Indiana run, capped off by a Jori Davis 3-pointer with 30 second remaining put the Hoosiers back within two, 80-78. However, Florida State was able to hang on due to free throws for the 85-78 win.
Braun led Indiana with her first double-double of the season as she recorded 16 points and 11 rebounds to go along with six assists and three steals. Freshman Haylie Linn netted a career-high 16 points on 5-of-9 shooting, including a perfect 5-of-5 from beyond the arc. Davis also scored in double-figures for the Hoosiers as she netted 10 points.
Florida State boasted five players in double-figures and was paced by Freshour, who led all players with 21 points.
The Hoosiers won the battle of the boards, 40-35, but were outscored from the floor, 53.8 (28-of-52) percent to 45.3 (29-64) percent.
Indiana is back in action on Wednesday, Dec. 5, when it travels to Dayton, Ohio to take on the Dayton Flyers. Tip-off against the Flyers is set for 5:15 p.m. ET.
