    Hoosiers Win Thriller at IPFW, 69-68

    FT. WAYNE, Ind. - Sophomore Whitney Thomas and freshman Jamie Braun each posted double-doubles to lead the Indiana women's basketball team to a 69-68 win at IPFW in the second game of the Hoopla - Celebrating Women's Basketball showcase on Dec. 10.

    Thomas recorded a career night with 21 points and 14 rebounds for her third double-double of the season. Braun scored 12 points to go along with a career-high 11 boards for her first career double-double in her first career start.

    With 1:06 to go in the game, Thomas sank a jumper that put IU on top for good, 67-65. Junior Nikki Smith followed with a pair of free throws to give the Hoosiers a four-point advantage, 69-65, with 22 seconds left in the game. A 3-pointer from IPFW's Johnna Lewis-Carlisle with five seconds to go wasn't enough for IPFW as Indiana was able to hold on the 69-68 win.

    The Hoosiers jumped out to a 13-6 lead within the first eight minutes of the first half. The Mastodons cut IU's lead to just four, 13-9, on a 3-pointer by Lewis-Carlisle at the 11:54 mark. Indiana recovered and outscored IPFW, 5-2, to build up an 18-11 lead with 10:50 to go in the half. However, the Mastodons outscored the Hoosiers, 15-14, in the final 9:36 of the first stanza to come within four at the half, 32-29.

    IPFW opened the second half on a 6-2 run to take a 35-34 lead on a pair of jumpers from Samantha Edwards. But an 8-0 Hoosier run put IU back on top, 42-35, with 15:55 to go in the game. A 3-pointer from Lewis-Carlisle and a layup from Edwards cut IU's lead back to two, 42-40, with 14:39 to go. The Hoosiers put together a 10-6 run by way of eight points from Thomas to take a 52-46 lead with 11:23 on the clock. IPFW used a 13-4 run to take a 57-56 lead with 7:02 left in the game, only to see it slip away on a layup by IU's Vanita Smart at the 6:49 mark. The two teams continued to trade the lead with the Hoosiers taking a four-point advantage, 62-59, on a layup and pair of free throws by Braun with 4:53 to go. However, a pair of 3-pointers from IPFW gave the Mastodons a three-point lead, 65-62, with 4:01 on the clock. A layup from Thomas cut the deficit to one, 65-64, with 3:46 to go. A free throw from Thomas tied the game at 65-65, with 3:17 left in the game, as IU was able to battle back and outscore the Mastodons 4-3 in the closing minute for the win.



    Indiana shot 48.1 percent (26-of-54) from the field and won the battle of the boards, 44-32. The Hoosiers held the Mastodons to 37.1 percent (23-of-62) shooting from the floor.

    Senior Sarah McKay also scored in double-digits for the Hoosiers with 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the floor. She added six rebounds, two assists and two blocked shots.

    Lewis-Carlisle led IPFW with 19 points on 7-of-16 shooting from the floor, including four 3-pointers, while Ashley Johnson added 16 points, Hannah Thieke scored 11 and Edwards scored 10 in the effort.

    The Hoosiers return home with a three-game homestand to close the non-conference slate of the schedule. IU opens the homestand with Southern Illinois on Dec. 16 at 7 p.m. in Assembly Hall.
