ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Senior Jamie Braun led all players with 23 points as the Indiana women's basketball team picked up a 74-61 win at Saint Louis on Sunday, Dec. 13.
Braun also registered five steals, four assists and three rebounds in the win. Sophomore Ashlee Mells scored a career-high 14 points off the bench and junior Jori Davis netted 12 points and added a team-high nine rebounds.
The Hoosiers (7-3) erased a six-point deficit and used a 21-6 run, sparked by a free throw from Davis, to take a 25-16 lead with 2:59 left in the first half. However, the Billikens (3-6) responded with back-to-back layups that cut IU's lead to five, 25-20, with 2:10 to go. A layup from Davis at the 1:52 mark increased the Indiana advantage to seven, but a layup from SLU's Lauren Woods with 55.4 seconds remaining kept the margin at five, 27-22. A layup from Braun with 45.6 seconds to go sent the Hoosiers into the halftime break leading 29-22.
Both teams battled back and forth the first five minutes of the second half as Saint Louis outscored the Hoosiers, 9-7, to cut IU's lead to four, 35-31, with 14:37 on the clock. However, Indiana tightened up on defense and used a 15-2 run, started by a layup from Braun, to take a 51-33 lead with 11:09 to go. The Hoosiers continued to dominate, leading by as many as 20 en route to the 74-61 win.
Braun sank 8-of-13 from the field, including a pair of 3-pointers, and netted 5-of-6 from the free throw line. Mells made 5-of-8 from the field and 4-of-6 from the 3-point line. Davis shot 4-of-14 from the field, but sank 4-of-6 from the free throw line, and seven of her nine rebounds came on the defensive end.
The Hoosiers shot 46.7 percent (28-of-60) from the field and 47.4 percent (9-of-19) from the 3-point line. Saint Louis shot 33.3 percent (20-of-60) from the field and made 3-of-14 from beyond the arc. The Billikens outrebounded the Hoosiers, 49-32, but IU's bench outscored SLU, 30-17 and the Hoosiers tallied 26 points off of 25 Saint Louis turnovers.
Indiana returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 19 when it visits Cleveland State with a 4:30 p.m. ET tip.
