INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The ninth-seeded Indiana Hoosiers will take on top-seed No. 5/6 Ohio State in the quarterfinal game of the 2007 Big Ten Women's Basketball Tournament presented by Xbox 360. Tip-off against the Buckeyes is at 6 p.m. ET.
LAST TIME OUT
In the first round of the tournament, the Hoosiers (18-12) knocked off No. 8 Iowa, 67-53. Kim Roberson led all players with 21 points, while Sarah McKay added 19 points for IU. The Hoosiers opened the game with a 9-0 lead and never looked backed as they maintained at least a three-point lead before heading into the break with a 34-21 advantage. Indiana never let up in the second half either, building up an 18-point lead (63-45, 2:03) en route to the victory.
THE OHIO STATE SERIES
OSU leads the all-time series with IU, 40-19. The Buckeyes hold a 1-0 advantage over the Hoosiers in the Big Ten Tournament. In the 2000 tournament, the No. 9 Buckeyes beat the No. 8 Hoosiers, 58-44, in the first round.
SCOUTING THE BUCKEYES
Ohio State enters the tournament as the No. 1 seed after claiming its third consecutive and 10th overall Big Ten Championship. The Buckeyes stand at 26-2 (.928), which is OSU's best regular season mark it went 15-1 (.938) in 1972-73. This season marks the third straight year where Ohio State has been the No. 1 seed in the tournament.
The Buckeyes closed the regular season with a 72-58 win at Michigan on Feb. 25. Ohio State jumped out to a 17-2 lead over the Wolverines, holding Michigan without a field goal for the first nine minutes, while sinking 28-of-34 from the charity stripe for the win.
Three-time Big Ten Player of the Year Jessica Davenport registered 25 points and 15 rebounds. Marscilla Packer added 17 points in the victory. Davenport is averaging 19.4 points and 9.7 rebounds per game on the season. The Buckeyes are averaging 73.4 points per game and 36.9 rebounds per game. Ohio State is 7-5 in the quarterfinal round and has won its last four quarterfinal games. The last time the Buckeyes lost in the quarterfinals was in 2002 as a No. 7 seed.
TAKING THE LEAD
Indiana is 13-1 when opening a game with the first basket, with 10 of those wins coming in Assembly Hall. IU got on the scoreboard against Iowa in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament on March 1 by way of a pair of free throws from Jamie Braun at the 16:46 mark. The Hoosiers netted the first basket at Notre Dame and IPFW for their other two wins on the road when they opened the game with the lead. Indiana is 5-11 when it falls behind in the opening minutes of a contest. The Hoosiers fell behind Minnesota on Feb. 4, but battled back for the 69-65 win.
