The Hoosiers will host the Dayton Flyers in the second round of the 2009 Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) on Sunday, March 22, in Assembly Hall. Tip-off against the Flyers is set for 2 p.m. ET. Sunday's game will be broadcast live on WHCC 105.1 FM Bloomington as Jeremy Gray calls the action between Indiana and Dayton from Branch McCracken Court.
IU head coach Felisha Legette-Jack is in her third year at the helm of the Hoosier program with a career mark of 110-102 over seven seasons. She led the Hoosiers to back-to-back postseason berths in the WNIT and an 18-15 mark in 2007-08. Legette-Jack recorded her 100th career victory at Michigan State on Dec. 29, and reached her 50th win as the Hoosier mentor against Purdue on Jan. 19, 2009.
Dayton head coach Jim Jabir is 70-81 in his sixth season with the Flyers and 290-304 in his 22nd season overall.
SCOUTING THE FLYERS
Dayton enters Sunday game with a 21-13 overall record after defeating Oakland, 70-55, in the first round of the WNIT in Rochester, Mich. The Flyers were led by Kristin Daugherty with 19 points, while Justine Raterman recorded 16 points and 10 rebounds. Dayton shot 44.6 percent (25-of-56) from the field and outrebounded Oakland, 41-29. On the season, three Flyers are averaging double-digit points with Raterman leading the way with 13.3 points per game. She also averages a team-high 8.6 rebounds per game.
SERIES VS. DAYTON
Indiana owns a 6-3 overall record against Dayton, winning six straight meetings between 1980-06 before falling in last season's meeting, 67-59, in Dayton. The Hoosiers are 4-1 all-time against the Flyers in Assembly Hall.
In the two team's last meeting, the Flyers shot 46.7 percent from the 3-point line, sinking 7-of-15 treys to lead them to a 67-59 win. The two teams matched each other the boards with 45 rebounds, while Dayton had a scoring edge of 36.9 percent (24-of-65) to 30.8 percent (20-of-65). Whitney Thomas led IU with 20 points, 14 rebounds and three assists. Amber Jackson added 15 points and Jamie Braun collected 12 points, nine rebounds and two assists.
NOTES OF INTEREST
Sunday's meeting marks the 10th all-time between the Hoosiers and Dayton, with IU leading, 6-3.
Senior Whitney Thomas and junior Jamie Braun each entered IU's 1,000 point club this season. Thomas recorded her 1,000-th career point on Jan. 4 vs. Iowa, and Braun reached the 1,000 mark on Jan. 19 vs. Purdue.
Indiana is 16-0 when leading with five minutes remaining in the game.
In the two team's last meeting, Dayton won, 67-59, on its home floor on Dec. 5, 2007.
In two career meetings vs. Dayton, Whitney Thomas has averaged 16.5 points, 9.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 2.0 steals and one block per game. In the second meeting, Thomas collected a double-double with 20 points and 14 rebounds.
