Jill Chapman was selected by the Detroit Shock with the 21st pick in the WNBA Draft.

Bloomington, Ind. - Indiana’s Jill Chapman was the 21st pick of the WNBA Draft by the Detroit Shock.

“I don’t think I really believed it at first,” Chapman said of being selected by the WNBA. “I was there with my family and friends and after they called my name, I just kind of sat there and stared. I didn’t hear any of the other names being called afterward or anything. I was just like “oh my gosh, I just got drafted.’”

Chapman figures to bolster a Shock front line that ranked last in the WNBA in blocked shots. At 6-5, Chapman would be the second-tallest player on the Detroit roster, behind only 6-6 Oksana Zakaluzhnaya. Zakaluzhnaya averaged 3.9 points and 2.0 rebounds per contest last year.

“I have only gotten a chance to watch them once,” Chapman said of the Shock. “I think if I just go in and play my game, things will be fine. I need to show them that I can make the 15-footer when I have it, but for the most part, I think I just need to stick to what I have been doing.”

Chapman, who led the Hoosiers to a Big Ten Tournament Championship as a senior, was a first-team All-Big Ten honoree by both the coaches and media. She led Indiana with 16.1 points per game and 9.1 rebounds per contest. Her 2.23 blocks per game led the Big Ten. Chapman left IU as only the second player in school history to have scored 1,860 points and to have grabbed 970 rebounds.

Chapman will leave for Detroit for pre-season camp in two weeks.
