IU Women's Basketball Adds Transfer Claire Jakubicek
May 9, 2012
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women's basketball team added a new name to the roster on Wednesday as head coach Curt Miller announced the addition of Claire Jakubicek. Jakubicek, who was named Mid-American Conference (MAC) Freshman of the Year last season, will join the Hoosiers after transferring from Northern Illinois University.
"We are excited that Claire has elected to join our Hoosier family. Claire is coming off an outstanding freshman season at the collegiate level," Miller said. "She is a versatile, hard-working forward that can score both on the perimeter and inside the paint. She is strong and physical which allows her to play bigger than her size. Claire was courted by many schools during her transfer process but eventually chose us and will be an important building block for our future."
Jakubicek will begin classes at Indiana this summer. She will sit out the 2012-13 season and will begin her Hoosier career as a redshirt sophomore in 2013.
In 2011-12, the 5-11 forward paced NIU in scoring with 11.0 points per game while shooting 46.3 percent from the field and a team-leading 95.9 percent from the free throw line. The Cary, Ill., native also grabbed 5.1 rebounds per contest, the second best mark for the Huskies last year. She appeared in 24 games before she broke her right foot, which ended her season on Feb. 16.
Jakubicek scored in double figures 13 times, leading the team in scoring a team-best eight times on the year, including a career-high 21 points against Chicago State on Dec. 11, 2011. In that game, she also set career marks with eight rebounds and five assists.
Prior to her injury, Jakubicek had connected on 37 consecutive free throws. She was one of just three freshmen in the MAC that averaged double figure points.
Jakubicek graduated from Cary Grove High School, where she ended her basketball career as the school's all-time leading scorer with 1,700 points. She was a four-year varsity letterwinner and captained the Trojans to back-to-back conference and regional championships in her junior and senior seasons.
As a senior, Jakubicek averaged 19.8 points, 8.0 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 3.1 steals per game as her team finished with a 27-4 record. During her four seasons, the Trojans compiled an overall record of 101-19. She was also a part of the Midwest Elite AAU program in the greater Chicago area.
