IU Women's Basketball Continues to Excel at Academics
May 20, 2010
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women's basketball team continues to excel academically, posting six players with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher during the spring semester.
"I am so proud of the academic effort put forth by our team," said IU head coach Felisha Legette-Jack. "Our young ladies pushed themselves and were able to get great results. Character first, academics second, and then basketball will continue to be our motto."
The Hoosiers also boasted two players as IU's Scholar-Athletes of the Month, with rising junior Danilsa Andujar earning the honor for February and rising junior Georgie Jones receiving the award for April/May.
"The team had a strong finish to the semester," said IU Assistant Athletic Director for Academics and Student Development Services Kelly Noonan. "Every player made positive strides in their classes and it was great to see them focused and determined at the end of the stretch. This team continually shows dedication to academics, which is reflected in their Big Ten and IU accolades."
IU women's basketball also posted five players on the 2009-10 Winter Academic All-Big Ten list, including Andujar, redshirt freshman Sasha Chaplin, sophomore Lindsay Enterline, and juniors Jori Davis and Andrea McGuirt.
"Many of the players have not taken a break from academics," said Noonan. "The Tuesday after finals week, half of the team was back in class for the first summer session. It is a great way for them to make progress on their degree and take challenging courses outside of the playing season."
McGuirt joined senior Jamie Braun as a part of the Class of 2010 graduating from Indiana University in May. McGuirt finished her undergraduate degree in Accounting in three years and will finish out her eligibility while attending graduate school at IU this fall in the Kelley School of Business. She was also the 2009-10 IU Scholastic Achievement honoree for women's basketball. Braun received her Bachelor's degree in General Studies with a minor in Criminal Justice. They are two of just eight Hoosiers that have donned the cap and gown at IU since the arrival of Legette-Jack in 2006-07 (Leah Enterline-2007, Nikki Smith-2008, Amber Jackson-2009, Kim Roberson-2009, Lydia Serfling-2009, Whitney Thomas-2009, Jamie Braun-2010, Andrea McGuirt-2010).
