Indiana guard Cyndi Valentin is in Puerto Rico going through training camp with the Puerto Rican National Team as it prepares for qualifying rounds of the FIBA Americas Qualifying Tournament this summer.
While in Puerto Rico, the 2004 honorable mention all-Big Ten selection is keeping a diary for iuhoosiers.com. Following is her first entry:
"Today was actually pretty laid-back. We practice five times per week, so we had today off. There are lots of players on the team that have full-time jobs, so these days off are particularly helpful for them.
With today being a day off, I slept in. When I got up, I walked downtown for a little shopping and got a shirt, some shorts and a book to read. We have a lot of downtime out here, so I also got a word search to work on. We're going to watch the Puerto Rican men's team play tonight.
There have been some things that I've had to adjust to out here, with practice being the biggest thing. It's hard to interact with my teammates and the coach speaks pure Spanish. I really have to listen hard to pick up on what's being said. Also, I can't say that I'm too excited about having to wear the full spandex uniforms that we have.
One of the things I really like about being down here is the food. My mom actually makes a lot of it too. I've had some really good chicken dishes, plus yellow rice with gandules and pasteles. Of course, I've also had Wendy's once or twice too!
We have practice tomorrow. I am going to lift in the morning, then I'll go to the mall with my grandparents."
