Bloomington, Ind. - A trio of 2004 NCAA Women's Tournament participants and the homecoming of former Bloomington South, WNBA star and current Virginia Commonwealth head coach Beth (Morgan) Cunningham headline the 2004-05 Indiana women's basketball non-conference schedule, head coach Kathi Bennett announced today.

The Hoosiers jump into the season with an immediate challenge, traveling to Waco, Texas to tangle with a Baylor squad that advanced to the Sweet 16 in last year's NCAA Tournament. The Lady Bears were listed in the top 10 for 2005 by Sports Illustrated and return the bulk of their scoring and rebounding from last year's squad. The last time Indiana opened its season on the road was in 2001-02, when the Hoosiers traveled to Palo Alto, Calif., to take on Stanford.

"Nothing is going to come easy during the non-conference season, but a schedule like this will prepare us well for the Big Ten season," Bennett said. "With some of the returning talent that we have coming back, we can use a schedule like this to our advantage."

The Hoosiers open their home schedule with the Hampton Inn Classic, battling Belmont in the Classic opener on Nov. 27, then taking on either Central Michigan or Chicago State the next day.

Indiana travels to Fayetteville, Ark., for a December 1 date against an Arkansas squad that handed the Hoosiers a 78-70 setback at Assembly Hall last year. Louisville visits Indiana on Dec. 3, and despite the proximity of the two schools, the Hoosiers and Cardinals have not met since a 64-57 Indiana win in 1988.
Indiana then hits the road for three consecutive games away from Assembly Hall -- a Dec. 6 date with Indiana State in Terre Haute, followed by a brief East Coast swing with games at Maine on Dec. 10 and at Boston University on Dec. 12. The Hoosiers handed NCAA Tournament-bound Maine a 67-58 defeat in Bloomington last year.

    |Another NCAA Tournament participant in Eastern Michigan comes to Assembly Hall on December 18, marking the first-ever match-up between the two schools.

The Hoosiers' Dec. 22 contest against Virginia Commonwealth is not only a rematch of last season's 68-54 Indiana win in Richmond, but also brings VCU head coach Beth (Morgan) Cunningham back to her home town of Bloomington. Cunningham is the daughter of Indiana's longtime baseball coach Bob Morgan and starred at Bloomington South HS and Notre Dame before going on to play for the Washington Mystics of the WNBA

The non-conference slate concludes with a Feb. 17 tilt against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at Assembly Hall.
Indiana returns its entire roster from last season, headlined by All-Big Ten pick Jenny DeMuth and honorable mention all-conference honoree Cyndi Valentin. The Hoosiers have a summer filled with international basketball that will prepare them for the slate, as Bennett and her coaching staff, DeMuth and Jamie Gathing will all represent the Big Ten on its Foreign Tour in June. Valentin is competing for the Puerto Rican National Team this summer, while center Sarah McKay is competing for the Canadian National Team.
