    Williams Joins Hoosiers


    Bloomington, Ind. - Indiana women's basketball head coach Kathi Bennett announced today the signing of April Williams to a national letter of intent for the 2002-03 season.

    Williams hails from Covington High School in Covington, Tenn., where she played for coach Sharman Coley.

    A 6-0 guard/forward, Williams averaged 20 points and nine rebounds during her senior season and ranked among the top 35 shooting guards in the nation, according to the All-Star Girls Report. She earned district and region most valuable player honors and was an honorable mention all-state selection.

    "April is going to give us the added depth we want at our guard positions," Bennett said. "She is an incredible young lady that will fit in with our team. With April's heart and determination, she is going to be a tremendous player for us."

    Williams was an All-Metro team selection by the Memphis Commercial Appeal and was nominated as the player of the year after leading Covington to a 24-6 record and a Region 7 championship. Covington was a Tennessee Class AA State Tournament participant.

    During her career, she scored 1,800 points, grabbed 414 rebounds and had 180 steals to go with her 91 assists.

    Among the other schools recruiting her were Virginia, Kentucky and Memphis.

    She joins the following list of players who signed with the Hoosiers during the early signing period (information on all the following signees came prior to the start of this past season.)

    Cyndi Valentin
    5-8 Guard
    Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington HS

    High School: High scoring local product who attends Bloomington South HS, where she was a Herald-Times All-Region selection in both her sophomore and junior years...Led the Panthers to a win over the top-ranked team in the state during her senior season...Chosen as a 2001 Junior All-Star...Earned All-State honors as a junior and was chosen as the AM 1370 WGCL Player of the Week nine times...Averaged 21.9 points and 6.1 rebounds as a junior en route to earning a spot on the Hoosier Basketball Magazine fourth-team all-state squad.

    "Cyndi is a complete player. She is a scorer with three-point range who can get to the rim and pull up for the medium-range jumper. She is very explosive on both ends. I believe Cyndi is one of the best two-guards around."

    6-2 Forward
    Marshall, Ind./Turkey Run HS

    High School: All-around talent who attends Turkey Run HS, in Marshall, Ind., where she was chosen as a 2001 Indiana Junior All-Star...Earned adidas All-American honors and was a Hoosier Basketball Magazine All-State selection...Region Roundball Review, Fifth Quarter and Hoosierland Report all named her a Player to Watch...Earned most valuable player honors at the 1999 Junior Nationals in Indianapolis...Sectional MVP in her sophomore year...Earned All-Conference and All-Sectional honors in each of her first three seasons...Chosen as the Journal Review's Athlete of the Week and the Elks' Athlete of the Month...Led the team in rebounds, steals, assists and blocked shots...Averaged 14.1 points per game and blocked 32 shots as a junior...President of the National Honor Society and is a six-year member...Also lettered in softball, establishing a new Indiana state home run record...Ranked fourth in her class....Also considered Tennessee, Notre Dame, Iowa, Wisconsin and Michigan, among others.

    "Brigett is very athletic and skilled. She will fit in our system very well at the four spot because she can shoot the 15-17 footer consistently and can post. She has an incredible work ethic."

    5-8 Guard
    Mound, Minn./Orono HS

    High School: Defensive-minded player who attends Orono HS in Mound, Minn., where she earned All-State recognition from the Sun Newspaper as a junior...Averaged 12.4 points, 3.9 assists and 3.7 rebounds per game during her junior year, all while playing with two broken wrists, which she had surgery on following the season...Three-time all Metro Alliance Conference honoree...Named to the St. Paul Pioneer Press' All-Defensive squad three times...Chosen as one of Minnesota Basketball News' Fab 15 Players of the Year...Has been considered one of the top players in the state of Minnesota since her freshman year...Also lettered for the volleyball and softball teams, earning All-Conference recognition in volleyball...Is a member of the Orono HS wind ensemble and jazz ensemble, being named to the All-Conference Jazz Band...Active member of the Student Council and serves as a mentor for freshmen...Five-time recipient of the Distinguished Academic Achievement Award...Ranked eighth in her class of 198.

    6-3 Center
    Winter Haven, Fla./Winter Haven HS

    High School: Is considered a national top 60 prospect...Attends Winter Haven HS in Winter Haven, Fla., where she led the Blue Devils to a 28-3 regular season record in her junior season...Received an invitation to play in the McDonald's All-American game during her senior season...Was one of only 14 players to be named to the Senior All-Star Team at the adidas Top 100 Basketball Showcase in Pittsburgh, Pa...Averaged 16 rebounds per game...Also considered Alabama, Providence and South Florida, among others.

    "Angela is someone who has the potential to be a player we can build our future around. She plays extremely aggressive basketball and she rebounds and runs the floor all the time."



    LeeAnn Stephenson
    5-6 Guard
    Garland, Texas/Lincoln Trail CC

    Previous School: Defensive stopper who attends Lincoln Trail CC in Robinson, Ill...Will come to Indiana as a junior...Is the only member of this year's recruiting class with Division I experience, as she started her collegiate career at Arkansas-Little Rock, where she turned in a 14-point, 14-rebound game against Louisiana Tech during her freshman season.

    High School: Attended Garland HS in Garland, Texas, where she was a three-time recipient of the school's Defensive Player of the Year award...Earned district Defensive Player of the Year recognition in her senior season...An Academic All-District selection.

    "LeeAnn plays under control, but is extremely quick about it. She will be a tremendous on-the-ball defender and is a very good medium-range jump shooter."
