Jill Hartman is a member of the Big Ten Foreign Tour team that travels through Europe later this month
Bloomington, Ind. - Indiana women's basketball player Jill Hartman will represent the Hoosiers as a member of the Big Ten Foreign Tour team this month.
Hartman and the rest of the squad will be in action for five games in 10 days throughout Belgium and Holland from June 14-24. Northwestern head coach June Olkowski will lead a team that is looking to match the undefeated run of last year's Big Ten Foreign Tour team.
Fresh off a solid junior season that saw her serve as a key component off the bench for an Indiana squad that emerged as the Big Ten Tournament Champions, Hartman will follow Heather Cassady as a member of the Foreign Tour squad. Cassady used last year's experience with the Foreign Tour team as a springboard for the most productive season of her career.
"I have been working out every day this summer and staying in shape," Hartman said. "I want to improve on things and I have been working really hard on my shooting and ballhandling and on getting stronger. This tour will help me."
Joining Hartman on the team are Minnesota's Corrin Von Wald, Purdue's Lindsey Hicks, Michigan State's Julie Pagel, Penn State's Jess Brungo, Illinois' Brenda Blackburn, Michigan's Stephanie Gandy, Ohio State's Caity Matter, Wisconsin's Stephanie Rich, Northwestern's Leslie Dolland and Melissa Culver and Iowa's April Calhoun.
"No one has worked harder for this," Indiana head coach Kathi Bennett said of Hartman's selection to the team. "She is working hard to be a leader and help us with a lot of scoring. What a great opportunity this will be for her. She is going to get the chance to build close friendships and relationships and this will be a great chance for her to meet people she usually plays against."
Other than Hartman and Cassady, other Hoosiers to have recently played on the Big Ten Foreign Tour team recently include Jill Chapman (1999) and Cindy Kerns (1998).
After practicing together in Chicago for three days, the team heads to Europe on June 14 and takes the court for the first time on June 16, when they play Den Helder in Amsterdam, Holland.
"This is one of the only times that I'll be able to go over there, so I am going to try to do as much as possible and take as many pictures as possible," Hartman said. "This is a once in a lifetime experience. I have never been there and I may never be there again."
