Valentin Nets 22 Points in Champ. (6-18-04)
June 18, 2004
Bloomington, Ind.--Indiana guard Cyndi Valentin and the Puerto Rican national team wrapped up action at the CBC Championships with a 72-53 loss to Cuba Thursday night in Puerto Rico. Valentin was the team-leading scorer, netting 22 points.
Despite the loss, Puerto Rico put forth a great effort against a very tough Cuban team. In the first meeting between the two squads in the earlier part of the tournament, Cuba dominated and went on to win 107-48, but Thursday's game would be a different story. During the first half, the Cubans only held a slight advantage, 36-25. Puerto Rico put up a good fight in the last few minutes of the game, giving the Cubans a big scare, but in the end Cuba would hang on for the win.
Cuba, Puerto Rico, Jamaica and Barbados, are the teams that will compete in the second round, which will be played from July 20-25 in Guatemala City, Guatemala. Should the team advance through the second round, it will compete at the FIBA Americas World Championship Qualifying Tournament in 2005. The site of that tournament has not yet been determined.
