#IUWBB Freshman Update: Maura Muensterman
June 25, 2014
The Indiana women's basketball program will welcome four freshmen in Tyra Buss, Amanda Cahill, Maura Muensterman and Jess Walter to campus this summer. As part of a weekly series, IUHoosiers.com will post a feature for each of these four incoming players that includes updates from their senior year of high school.
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana women's basketball adds one of the most decorated players to ever come out of the city of Evansville in Maura Muensterman. A career that featured two state championships, setting the all-time career mark in Indiana history in assists (774 assists) and finishing her career as the 11th-best career scorer in the history of girls basketball in the state (2,306 points).
Muensterman brings versatility with her to Bloomington. She achieved the assist record playing the wing position rather than being a point guard. She led Mater Dei High School to back-to-back state championships in 2012 and 2013, and then a runner-up finish as a senior in 2014. Muensterman hit the game-winning shot for Mater Dei in the championship game in 2012 and then the next year set the title game record for assists (9) in 2013. Muensterman earned a spot on the Junior and Senior Indiana All Star squads and was considered one of the best shooters in the state during her career.
In her senior season, Muensterman averaged 22.5 points, 8.4 assists, 7.1 rebounds, 2.9 steals and 2.7 blocks per game. She also was impressive shooting the ball in her final season at Mater Dei, as she went 54 percent from the field, including hitting 52 percent of her 3-point shots. Her senior season totals were impressive enough to make her a finalist for Indiana Miss Basketball.
She is the all-time career leading scorer, male of female, in the history of the Southern Indiana Conference. Muensterman was a three time conference player of the year honoree and three times earned Evansville's All City Metro Player of the Year award.
Every season of her high school basketball career, Muensterman averaged 22.0 points per game or more. In three different seasons, she dished for 8.1 assists per game or better. She never shot less than 54 percent from the field overall and shot 45 percent or better from beyond the arc in all four years.
Muensterman also dominated on the volleyball court and softball field. She led the Mater Dei volleyball team to four sectional titles and a regional championship during her career and was first team all-conference all four years. In softball, she earned second team all-state honors and was the Southern Indiana Conference batting champion during her career.
Muensterman is ranked as one of the top four players in the state of Indiana by all of the major recruiting services. Dan Olson's Collegiate Girls Basketball Report ranks her as the 38th best wing in the nation. The Midwest Girls Basketball Report names her the 18th overall prospect in the Midwest.
