Hoosiers Visit North Lawrence Girl Scout Troop Summer Day Camp
July 10, 2007
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women's basketball team took time out of their summer schedule to teach a few lessons at the North Lawrence Girl Scout Troop summer day camp in Bedford, Ind., on Tuesday, July 10.
"Getting out in the community is always a great opportunity for our program and our student-athletes," IU Director of Women's Basketball Operations Stephanie Siler said. "Coming out and getting to do activities with the girl scouts was a lot of fun and just a great experience. We really want to get out in the community more and get the youth in the Bloomington area more involved with the IU women's basketball program."
The Hoosiers used an hour-long session instructing a group of 22 girls scouts, ages 6-9, lay-up, dribbling and ball handling skills.
"Young girls need to learn from role models and with the IU women's basketball team coming down, it gives them someone to look up to and respect," North Lawrence Girl Scout Troop leader Jilda Lewis said. "With girl scouts, we teach them to reach for the highest star. This was a great opportunity for them to see young women in a positive role giving back to a community that supports them. We look forward to many visits from the team in the future."
"It's very important for our student-athletes to serve as role models for the children in the community," Siler said. "It gives them the opportunity to give back and know that they have an impact by the support that they provide. This event was just another example of that."
