    IU HIRES ASSISTANT COACH

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana women's basketball coach Jim Izard announced today the hiring of Melanie Stephens as assistant coach. Stephens takes over the position from Jennifer Jacoby who was elevated to the program's recruiting assistant coach in July.

Stephens, a native of Eatonton, Ga., spent last season as the top assistant coach for the women's program at Binghamton (SUNY) in Binghamton, N.Y. Prior to that, she served as the graduate assistant coach for her alma mater Georgia College and State University from 1996-98. As a player, Stephens set the school record for 3-point field goals in a game with eight.

Stephens received her Masters of Education in administration and supervision from Georgia College and State University in 1998.

"I am very excited to join the program," Stephens said. "I have always wanted to coach basketball and to be able to do it at this level and in the Big Ten is very important to me."

"We are excited to add Melanie to our staff," said Jim Izard. "She gives us expertise in the guard area and will help us out with recruiting as she has had three years of experience with both on and off campus recruiting."
