Catching Up with Cyndi Valentin
Aug. 23, 2006
Former Indiana women's basketball standout Cyndi Valentin continues to shine as she has taken her basketball career oversees. The first team All-Big Ten selection for the Hoosiers in 2005-06 recently led the Puerto Rican National Team to a fourth-place finish at the Centrobasket Championships July 25-29 in Mexico City, before signing a contract to play professionally in Israel.
The 5-8 guard helped the Puerto Rican squad advance out of pool play with three wins over the Virgin Islands, Jamaica and Costa Rica. In tournament play, Puerto Rico narrowly fell to Mexico, 72-69, and Jamaica, 71-67, to claim fourth place.
"It was a great honor to play for my home country," Valentin said. "To be able to represent my roots and my heritage is special. I had a lot of fun playing for the Puerto Rican National Team this summer. I liked a lot of my teammates and coaches. Overall, it was a great experience."
Following her time with the Puerto Rican squad in Mexico, the Bloomington, Ind., native signed a contract to play professionally in Israel. Valentin, who is working out in Bloomington until Sept. 19, will live in the Israeli city of Holon and play for Elizur Belisima Holon for the seven-month season.
"I am looking forward to playing in Israel and taking the next step in my basketball career," Valentin said. "I know the league is competitive, and the country is beautiful. I am really excited to get started."
