November 23, 1999 IU WOMEN FALL TO SOUTH CAROLINA
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana's women's basketball team suffered a 95-79 set back to South Carolina in its home season opener Friday evening at Assembly Hall.
With the loss, the Hoosiers drop to 0-2 while the Gamecocks improve to 3-0.
South Carolina jumped out to an early 13 point lead as IU fell behind 15-2 through the first five minutes. By the 6:07 mark, the Hoosiers had fought back to tie the game 26-26 and matched South Carolina point for point until the Gamecocks went on a 9-2 run to close out the final two minutes of the half to lead 42-35 at the intermission.
The quicker South Carolina team took a toll on the Hoosiers defense as the Gamecocks built their lead to 76-57 with 10 minutes to go and held on for the victory.
Jill Chapman led four Hoosiers with double digits, scoring 22 points and hauling down 110 rebounds. Heather Cassady added 15 points and nine assists for IU while Jill Hartman netted 13 points in her first collegiate start.
As a team, IU shot 48 percent from the field while the Gamecocks connected on 51 percent of their shots. South Carolina won the battle of the boards 40-33.
"With a young team, everything needs to be talked about," said Jim Izard. "The first five minutes of the game and the last two of the half. That was two critical stages of the game that we did not execute tonight. But give South Carolina credit. They came in here and played with a lot of intensity."
The Hoosiers return to action this weekend, hosting the 12th Annual Full-O-Pep
Classic Friday and Saturday, Nov. 26-27. Indiana plays Stetson at 6 p.m.,
Friday, followed by IUPUI and East Carolina at 8 p.m. Saturday's consolation
and championship games will be played at 6 and 8 p.m., respectively.
