December 4, 1999 INDIANA DEFEATS BALL STATE IN BIG FOUR CLASSIC
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Led by a career-high 35 points and 21 rebounds, the Hoosiers defeated Ball State 72-52 in the second game of the eighth-annual Big Four Classic held at Assembly Hall Saturday afternoon. Purdue narrowly defeated Indiana State 69-67 in the first game of the Classic.
With the win the Hoosiers improve to 3-3 on the season while the Cardinals fall to 4-2.
"It felt good to get career highs against Ball State since that is by my hometown," said Jill Chapman. "I just wanted to go out there and play hard."
Neither side was able to make much of a run in the first half with each trading baskets for an eventual 31-all tie at the intermission.
Indiana opened the second half with a 7-0 run and never looked back, playing aggressively both offensively and defensively.
Hartman joined Chapman with a double-double, scoring 12 points and grabbing 14 rebounds. Hartman also dished out six assists. Junior Rainey Alting was solid with seven points, six rebounds and seven assists.
As a team, IU shot 43 percent from the field and outrebounded Ball State 62-41.
"These instate intra rival games are tough to play, " said
Coach Jim Izard. "Obviously, the first half was back and forth and
in the second half we made some adjustments and were able to get the ball
inside. Rainey (Alting) also picked up her defensive play in the second
half. I was pleased with our effort in the second half."
