December 7, 1999 HOOSIERS LOSE CLOSE GAME TO VALPARAISO 64-60
VALPARAISO, Ind. - Indiana women's basketball team dropped a 64-60 decision to a scrappy Valparaiso team Tuesday evening at the Athletics-Recreation Center. With the loss, the Hoosiers fall to 3-4 on the season while Valparaiso evens its record to 3-3.
The Hoosiers led 31-24 at the half but were outscored 40-29 after the intermission. Freshman Jill Hartman led the Hoosiers in scoring and rebounding with 15 points and eight rebounds. Heather Cassady added 13 points, five rebounds and five assists before fouling out in the final minute.
As a team the Hoosiers shot 40 percent from the field but were outrebounded 44-30. Indiana did shoot a season-high 89 percent from the charity stripe, connecting on 16-19 free throws.
"The key to the game was Jill Chapman picking up her third foul in the first half and then getting called for her fourth foul early in the second half," said Jim Izard. "Give Valparaiso credit, they played with a lot of intensity."
The Hoosiers will next be in action, traveling to Arizona to compete in the Insight.com Bowl Basketball Classic in Tucson, Ariz., Dec. 10-12. Indiana will face Middle Tennessee State Friday, Dec. 10, at 6 p.m. (MST), in the opening round of the tournament.
