Hoosiers Open Three-Game Homestand with Southern Illinois

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women's basketball team will host Southern Illinois on Saturday, Dec. 16, to open a three-game homestand that will conclude the non-conference portion of its schedule.
The Hoosiers (8-2) won a 69-68 nail-biter at IPFW in the final game of the Hoopla: `Celebrating Women in Basketball' showcase on Dec. 10. Sophomore Whitney Thomas scored a career-high 21 points and tied a career-best when she added 14 rebounds for her third double-double of the season. Freshman Jamie Braun, in her first collegiate start, recorded her first-ever double-double with 12 points and a career-best 11 boards. Senior Sarah McKay also aided in the win with 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the floor, six rebounds and two blocked shots.
IU won the battle of the boards, 44-32, and held the Mastodons to 37.1 percent (23-of-62) shooting from the field. The Hoosiers have outrebounded their opponents in five of their 10 games this year, and have held their foes to less than 40.0 percent shooting in seven of their 10 games.
The Southern Illinois Salukis (3-6) are coming off losses at South Alabama on Dec. 5, and at South Dakota State on Dec. 9. The Salukis fell short at South Alabama, 60-59, as they were held scoreless for the final 3:50 of the game. Jasmine Gibson led SIU with 16 points, while Carlai Moore added 14 in the effort.
On Dec. 9, SIU forced South Dakota State into committing 22 turnovers, but the Jacks shot 57.8 percent (26-of-45) from the field and outrebounded the Salukis, 37-23, for the 72-59 win. Moore led the way for SIU with 23 points and Jayme Sweere added 14 points in the loss. Moore currently leads the Salukis with 18.0 points and 4.1 rebounds per game. She is a shooting 62.5 percent (70-of-122) from the field and 72.4 percent (21-of-29) from the free throw line.
Indiana leads the all-time series with Southern Illinois, 11-3, winning the last three meetings. The Hoosiers brought home a 64-59 win on Dec. 2, 2005. Former Hoosier Cyndi Valentin led IU with 19 points, while Jenny DeMuth added a double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds. IU is undefeated against the Salukis in Assembly Hall, winning seven meetings in Bloomington dating back to Feb. 11, 1971.
