BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana Field Hockey team opened up the 2012 campaign in winning fashion, coming out on the better half of a 5-3 decision over host Kent State (0-1) this afternoon, August 24 at Murphy Mellis Field in Kent, Ohio.

Indiana (1-0) registered 18 shots in the contest, 12 of which on goal, for a healthy .667 shots on goal percentage.

Gaby Olshemski recorded a career-high two-goal performance, while Nicole Volgraf, Emily Bowker and Mariella Grote each tallied one goal apiece for IU.

Goalkeeper Viki Green made seven saves to start 1-0 on the year.

The Hoosiers' offense out-shot the Golden Flashes 10-3 in the first period alone, successfully converting on half of their shots on goal to jump out to an early 3-1 advantage.

Volgraf put the Hoosiers on the board in the fourth minute on a pass from Morgan Fleetwood. An unassisted goal by Bowker and a goal by Olshemski from Audra Heilman pushed IU ahead by three.

Kent State responded with a late goal in the first period, but the Hoosiers would quickly respond after Mariella Grote put one by Jahna Jordan to reclaim their three-goal lead in the 39th minute.

Olshemski found the back of the cage for the second time this afternoon on a pass from Rachel Sauffer to post the Hoosiers fifth and final goal of the contest in the 47th minute of play.

The home team tried to make a late run with goals at the 57th and 70th minute; however, the Hoosiers were able to maintain their lead and take home the win.

IU will remain in Kent, Ohio as they will play a neutral site contest with Vermont on Sunday, August 26 at 2:30 p.m. ET.
