Indiana Blanks Cal For Second Win Of the Season
Aug. 26, 2007
BERKELEY, Calif. - The Hoosiers field hockey team wrapped up its opening weekend with a 2-0 victory over California on Sunday. Indiana improves to 2-0 on the year for the first time since 2005, when it stated the year with three consecutive victories.
It didn't take long for the Hoosiers to get in the scoring column, as Meg O'Connell scored her first goal of the season three minutes into the game.
The teams played even through the rest of the game, with Indiana goalkeeper, Haley Exner, keeping the Golden Bears off the board for her first shutout of the season. Exner made four saves in the game.
"Cal is really good team," Indiana head coach Amy Robertson said. "They are very organized and assertive during the game and play a very aggressive style."
Its good when you have a one-goal lead and can play good defense," Robertson said, "but still come up with attacking opportunities at same time."
The Hoosiers took more penalty corners than the Golden Bears, 9-4, and also took more shots, 9-7.
The win was also the first one for the Hoosiers over the Golden Bears, having lost the previous three meetings.
Next up for the Hoosiers will be the home opener against Albany on Friday, August 31 at the brand new IU Field Hockey Field starting at 3 p.m. Also next weekend, the Hoosiers will host Saint Louis on Sunday, September 2, with a 1 p.m. start.
