Indiana Field Hockey Wins Season Opener, 3-2
Aug. 29, 2014
LOUISVILLE, Ky, - The Indiana field hockey team captured its first win of the season against New Hampshire, 3-2. The Hoosiers (1-0) were led by senior Audra Heilman who recorded a hat-trick with three goals in the second period.
“We just fought and battled through every play,” said Indiana head coach Amy Robertson. “It was as a team. Audra got the three goals but everyone contributed. It was a lot of fun to be part of a game like that.”
Despite seven shots by the Hoosiers, New Hampshire (0-1) scored the lone goal in the first period off the stick of Meg Flatley at the 10:35 mark.
The Hoosiers struck back in the second period with Heilman’s first goal of the game, a deflected penalty corner shot assisted by Karen Lorite.
New Hampshire quickly answered with an unassisted goal by Lindsey Nerbonne.
Heilman then found the back of the net for the second time in less than five minutes to tie the game, 2-2. As the clock wound down in the 68th minute, Heilman scored the game-winning goal for the Hoosiers off the assist from Rachel Stauffer.
“We looked at each at half-time and we all knew we weren’t going to step off that field without the victory,” said Heilman. “I just happened to be in the right place at the right time.”
The Hoosiers will wrap-up the road trip Saturday against St. Louis at 5 p.m.
