Hoosiers Fall To No. 10 Duke In Season Opener

DURHAM, N.C. –The Indiana field hockey team opened up the 2013 campaign this afternoon with a 4-0 loss at No. 10 Duke.
Despite the shutout, the Hoosiers still managed find the cage on the attack, firing 12 shots, five of which on goal, with freshman Morgan Dye pacing the IU offense with two shots at the cage. On the other end, the Blue Devils struck for four goals on 17 shots, 11 on goal.
Maggie Olson (0-1) was dealt the loss this afternoon and made seven saves for the Hoosiers. Her seven stops ties the second most in a single game for the redshirt-junior, matching her seven-save effort against Ohio on Sept. 9, 2012.
Duke would take an early lead in the second minute of play with an unassisted goal by Emmie Le Marchand and doubled its score on a goal from Cherry Seaborn.
The second half of play saw another two goals by the home squad. Le Marchand struck for her second goal of the day in the 41st minute and a late goal from Jessica Buttinger with 30 seconds remaining in the contest finalized the score at 4-0.
Indiana will continue its stay in Durham with a 3 p.m. game tomorrow against No. 17 Drexel. The contest will be the first meeting in program history between the two squads.
