Albany Gets Past Hoosiers at Home Opener
Aug. 31, 2007
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana Hoosiers opened the home portion of its 2007 campaign on Friday afternoon against the University at Albany Great Danes, the first home match in the brand new IU Field Hockey Field. The Danes were able to get two second half goals on their way to the 2-0 victory.
Both teams started out a little slow in the first half with neither team able to mount much on the offensive end. However, the Hoosiers (2-1) were able to get their offense in gear near the end of the half, generating a handful of opportunities in the final minutes.
Albany goalkeeper Ashley Ross was able to keep the Hoosiers off the board, making four saves in the game.
Indiana had a golden chance to score in the second half off a penalty corner, but the deflected shot sailed just wide off the stick of Kate O'Connell.
Albany (2-1) scored their first goal in the 44th minute when Jess Lindsey put one home off a rebound. In the 60th minute, Nicole Savage did the exact same thing, getting a rebound and scoring her second goal of the season.
"I think we are a smart team," Indiana head coach Amy Robertson said, "but I don't think we showed it at times. And that just played right into their hands in the end."
Indiana goalkeeper Haley Exner made three saves in the contest, but still suffered the loss.
Indiana will now move on to Sunday, when they will host the Saint Louis Billikens, starting at 1 p.m. About 15 minutes prior to the start of that match, there will be a dedication ceremony to officially dedicate the new field to the IU field hockey team.
