BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana Field Hockey team won its third consecutive contest today, Aug. 31 in its home opener at the IU Field Hockey Complex, defeating visiting Missouri State, 5-1.
The Hoosiers backfield limited the Bears to just seven shots on the afternoon and fired 35 shots, 20 on goal, against their opponent.
That offensive showing was well represented by the Hoosiers roster, as five different players tallied goals with Morgan Fleetwood, Audra Heilman, Emily Bowker, Hannah Boyer and Mariella Grote each finding the back of the cage. Heilman, Grote, Gaby Olshemski and Fleetwood each earned assists, while Danielle McNally was credited with two in the contest.
Viki Green improved to 3-0 on the season and made one save, while Maggie Olson flawlessly closed out the final 35 minutes of play.
IU jumped to an early lead in the eighth minute thanks to a Fleetwood goal from Grote and McNally on the penalty corner. Two minutes later, Heilman collected a rebound and put one through to increase the Hoosiers’ lead to two. Bowker then posted her second goal of the season, deflecting a pass from Gaby Olshemski to make it 3-0, Indiana.
Missouri State responded with a goal in the 35th minute, but IU quickly erased it with its fourth goal of the day by Boyer in the 51st minute. Grote earned IU’s final goal on an unassisted breakaway in the 68th minute of play as Indiana eventually went on to win it, 5-1.
IU will return to action on Friday, Sept. 7 when they host Louisville at 3 p.m.
