Indiana Wins Third Straight With 3-0 Victory Over Missouri State
Sept. 13, 2013
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana field hockey team collected its third consecutive shutout in front of a capacity crowd at the IUFH Complex this evening, defeating visiting Missouri State 3-0 to improve to 3-2 on the year. The three successive shutouts are the most by an IU squad in nearly a decade. The last time IU blanked opponents in three straight contests was during the 2003 campaign, earning wins over Central Michigan and Miami (Ohio).
Indiana’s Maggie Olson was credited the shutout win today to improve to 3-2 on the season. Her three shutout victories ties for the most in a single season by any IU goalkeeper and also moves her into fourth on the all-time career shutouts list.
The Hoosiers attack saw goals from a trio of faces, including the reigning Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week, Audra Heilman, who would also earn an assist on a goal by Danielle McNally. Mariella Grote would also find the back of the cage this afternoon for her second goal of the season.
IU managed to put bodies in the circle against the Bears which helped lead to a season-high 14 penalty corners. The Hoosiers recorded 24 shots in the game, the second-most of the year, and found 10 of those on goal. Indiana’s backfield continued to keep opposing teams out of the circle, allowing just two shots on goal for the third consecutive game.
Indiana waited until its fourth shot of the game to take the lead when Heilman broke free just left of center in the circle. She fired and came through with her fourth goal of the season to put the Hoosiers ahead, 1-0.
As time expired in the first half, Indiana drew a penalty corner in hopes off adding to its lead. It appeared the Hoosiers did just that when Heilman’s shot took a high bounce and into the net, but the referees stated after the ball was inserted, the ball was never stopped outside of the circle, therefore Indiana could not be credited with the goal.
Despite the goal being called back, the Hoosiers would eventually respond with a score in the 55th minute. Heilman sent a hard pass to McNally inside the circle, who managed to deflect the ball by Missouri State’s Katie Mulloy for IU’s second goal of the game.
Grote added to the Hoosiers lead following an IU penalty corner in the 65th minute. After taking a shot on the corner, the ball ricocheted between several players in front of the cage before Grote managed to control the rebound and put it through for the Hoosiers’ final goal of the day.
Indiana will return to action this Sunday, Sept. 15. They will host Robert Morris at the IUFH Complex at 2 p.m.
