    Bloomington, Ind. - The Indiana field hockey team won a 2-1 thriller against No. 22 California in front of a home crowd this afternoon after outmatching the Golden Bears in a game-deciding shootout, 6-5.

    The Hoosiers (5-1) and Bears (2-4) were evenly matched throughout the contest in both shots (16-15) and penalty corners (6-8) and would eventually lead into to the second consecutive contest for IU to be decided in a shootout.

    Morgan Fleetwood led Indiana's offensive attack this afternoon with seven shots and a goal, while Audra Heilman and Danielle McNally earned assists.

    The Hoosiers' also received a solid performance from their backfield that held the No. 22-ranked Bears to one goal in the contest. Goalkeeper Maggie Olson (1-1) provided a solid effort between the posts, making six saves on the day.

    Indiana was first to strike this afternoon, as Fleetwood gave IU its lead in the 11th minute, scoring her fifth goal of the 2012 campaign on a penalty corner from Heilman and McNally.

    After being held scoreless in the first 35 minutes and with regulation winding down, the visitors pulled goalkeeper Courtney Hendrickson in the 64th minute. She soon returned into the contest after Caroline Strujik tied the game at one apiece in the 67th minute of play.

    After two scoreless overtime sessions, both teams lined up for a game-deciding shootout.

    Cal converted on its first attempt to take a 1-0 lead, but Nicole Volgraf matched her opponent and found the back of the net.

    In Indiana's final best-of-five attempt, the Hoosiers needed a goal to tie the shootout at three and continue on into a sudden death shootout scenario. Brigitta Haller did not disappoint, putting one by Cal's goalkeeper to keep the Hoosiers alive.

    Indiana converted on its next four consecutive tries to defeat the Bears 6-5 in the shootout and help itself to a 2-1 win.

    The Hoosiers will return to action when they open up Big Ten conference play on Friday, September 21 at Penn State. Game time is slated for 3 p.m. ET.
