Sept. 21, 2007
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana field hockey team dropped its first game in Big Ten Conference play on Friday afternoon at Ohio State by a score of 2-1. Meg O'Connell scored the lone goal for the Hoosiers to tie the game just before halftime. But the Buckeyes got the game-winner in the 62nd minute from Michaela O'Malley.
Indiana's offense came out firing in the first half, firing eight shots in the first half compared to Ohio State's six. However, Ohio State (4-6, 1-0 Big Ten) took advantage in the offensive end, drawing six penalty corners as well.
Yesenia Luces gave Ohio State an early 1-0 lead less than ten minutes into the game by tapping the ball into the left side of the goal off a penalty corner. This first half goal was the first one allowed by Indiana this season.
In the 28th minute, Meg O'Connell answered for Indiana (4-4, 0-1 Big Ten), gathering a lose ball in front of the goal and putting it past Lindsay Quintiliani for her third goal of the season.
After halftime, neither team was able to get the offense going and combined for three total shots, two on goal.
Indiana goalkeeper Haley Exner continued her strong play in goal, but still took the loss. She has yet to allow an opponent to score more than two goals in a game this season.
The Hoosiers have little time to think about the loss at they return to the field on Saturday at noon to take on the Missouri State Bears.
