Fleetwood Hat Trick Leads Hoosiers Past Villanova
Oct. 21, 2012
Bloomington, Ind. – Morgan Fleetwood recorded her first career hat trick to help the Indiana field hockey team move past visiting Villanova, 4-0, today at the IUFH Complex. Fleetwood is just the sixth Hoosier in program history to record a hat trick and is the first since Meg O'Connell did so against Missouri State on Sept. 6, 2008.
Not only did Fleetwood add another accomplishment to her already impressive resume at IU, but the senior’s performance also propelled her atop of several all-time program career records. Following today’s contest, Fleetwood now holds the program’s record for career goals (43), career points (110) and ties the career game-winning goals category (14). All three marks were previously held by former Hoosier, Lydia Schrott (2003-’06).
Fleetwood’s three goals and an assist paced Indiana’s attack, but she would not be alone is setting career milestones. Teammate Amanda Bennison rounded out the Hoosiers’ scoring this afternoon with her first career goal in the 10th minute of the contest. Danielle McNally provided two assists in the game, while Audra Heilman and Mariella Grote also posted assists for IU.
Collaboratively, IU accrued 22 shots versus Villanova’s 16 and drew 10 penalty corners compared to seven for the Wildcats.
Indiana’s goals all occurred in the first half, with the initial go-ahead coming off the stick of Fleetwood in the sixth minute of play. Bennison doubled the Hoosiers’ lead in the 10th minute, and Fleetwood struck for the second and third time on the day in both the 17th and 27th minute.
IU will close out the regular season on Saturday, Oct. 27 when they host Ohio State on Senior Day at the IUFH Complex at 1 p.m. ET. Both Fleetwood and Green will be recognized as they play their final contest in Bloomington.
