Griswold's Overtime Goal Gives Hoosiers 2-1 Win Over Stanford
Oct. 22, 2007
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - On a cold and rainy day at the IU Field Hockey Field, the Indiana offense came alive when it needed to in overtime, as Katie Griswold took a feed from Haley Funk and deposited it in the back of the goal with just over a minute remaining in the first overtime to give Indiana the 2-1 win.
"It was an amazing feeling to get the game-winning goal," Griswold said after giving Indian their first overtime win since Oct. 14, 2006 against Northeastern. "We really wanted to get this win today."
With the Indiana (7-8, 0-5 Big Ten) offense struggling over the past three games, the start of the game was as ominous as the clouds above. Midori Uehara took a centering pass from Camille Gandhi and beat IU goalkeeper Haley Exner for the first goal of the game less than three minutes into the game.
The Hoosiers' continued to struggle the first ten minutes of the game, but they finally got their feet under them and took over the remainder of the first half, outshooting the Cardinal, 8-6. However, none of the shots found the back of the goal, as Madison Bell made five first half saves to keep the Hoosiers off the board.
Indiana's offense carried that momentum into the second half as well and Exner was on top of her game in goal, turning away penalty corner shots as well as a couple breakaway attempts from Stanford (8-6, 4-1 NorPac).
Finally, in the 53rd minute, the Hoosiers executed a penalty corner to perfection, with Meg O'Connell pushing the ball to Meredith Brown at the top of the circle, who then fed Amanda Oyler for her third goal of the season to tie the game at 1-1.
Both teams continued to put pressure on the defense late in the game with penalty corners, but the goalkeepers were up to the task and the game went into overtime.
In the extra session, which is played seven-on-seven as opposed to the normal 11-on-11, the offense for both teams dominated. The Hoosiers outshot Stanford 5-2 in overtime and also drew four penalty corners to the Cardinal one but could not take advantage.
With Stanford threatening, they committed a foul just outside the top of the circle. Indiana senior midfielder Meredith Brown quickly gathered the ball and put it back into play with a great outlet pass to Funk near midfield. Funk quickly turned and was joined by Griswold to create a two-on-one advantage for IU. As Funk entered the circle with the ball, the Bell came out of the Stanford goal to challenge her. Just before the keeper arrived, Funk dropped the ball off for Griswold on the right side and she sent it in the back of the goal for the game-winner.
For the game, Bell made 11 saves for Stanford while Exner finished with three. The Hoosiers also drew 15 penalty corners to the Cardinal five and outshot the Cardinal 21-10.
The Hoosiers will make their final regular season roadtrip of the year when they travel to Louisville, Ky. on Thursday to battle the Cardinals at 7 p.m.
