Oct. 26, 2013
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Trailing 4-2 with 11 minutes and 42 seconds left, the Indiana field hockey team took a stand and scored the last three goals of the game, including junior Audra Heilman’s game winning goal in overtime to lift the Hoosiers to a 5-4 win at Ohio State on Saturday.
The Hoosiers (8-8, 1-4) got contributions from a variety of players as five different players scored a goal and four different players recorded an assist.
Ohio State (5-11, 0-5) struck first at the 24:39 mark with a goal on the right side of the cage. The Hoosiers came back with a quick response, as 1:16 later senior Emily Bowker played the ball to sophomore Sydney Supica to even the score 1-1.
The Buckeyes opened the second half with a goal just a minute into the period and added their third goal at the 43:11 mark to push their lead to 3-1.
The Hoosiers got within one at 3-2 at the 47:45 mark, on a deflection that came to Karen Lorite, who connected on her fifth goal of the season.
After an Ohio State goal the Hoosiers trailed 4-2 until senior back Danielle McNally brought the Hoosiers to within one on an assist from Heilman.
The Hoosiers needed one more goal to force overtime and they got it from freshman forward Morgan Dye with 4:03 to play in regulation.
Neither team managed a shot on goal the first few minutes of overtime, but it was freshman Kate Barber, who found Heilman in front of the circle as Heilman struck the game-winning goal for the Hoosiers.
The Hoosiers and Buckeyes shot totals were nearly identical as the Hoosiers outshot Ohio State 12-11 and penalty corners were even at 5-5.
The Hoosiers are back in action tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. in their senior day game vs. Ball State at the IUFH Complex.
