IU Athletics Announces April Scholar-Athletes of the Month
June 5, 2013
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - IU Athletics has announced that freshmen Karen Gomez (field hockey) and Tevin Coleman (football) were named April Scholar-Athletes of the Month.
Gomez, a back/midfielder from Terrassa, Spain, played in 15 games her rookie season for the IU Field Hockey team.
"Karen, an international student-athlete from Spain, has had a tremendous freshman year considering the clear language barriers she struggles with daily," said Eileen O'Rourke, Academic Advisor. "Karen spends her time preparing for classes by meticulously picking apart her textbooks, even reading some chapters twice, to gain a complete understanding of the material. Her work ethic is second to none and I'm excited to see all that she will accomplish over the next few years."
Coleman, a running back from Tinley Park, Ill., started twice and played in 12 games for the Hoosiers in 2012, and earned Honorable Mention BTN.com All-Big Ten Freshman honors after leading the team with 566 yards on 24 kick returns with a 96-yard touchdown. His 23.6 average ranked third in the Big Ten and he rushed for 225 yards on 51 rushes (4.4 average) with one touchdown. Coleman added 10 receptions for 49 yards and finished third on the team with 840 all-purpose yards and 70.0 per game.
"Tevin got off to a slow start in the spring semester, but really seemed to hit his stride in the classroom as the semester wound down," said Travis Boyd, Academic Advisor. "April was a huge month for Tevin as he was able to convert his strong work ethic into tangible results, and his final semester grades reflect that consistent effort. He was able to achieve a semester GPA above 3.0 and has set himself up very well going forward to achieve his academic goals. My hope for Tevin is that this spring was a breakthrough semester for him and that the best is still to come."
