BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana field hockey team begins postseason play on Thursday afternoon as the sixth seed taking on the third seeded Iowa Hawkeyes at 2 p.m. The tournament is being held on the campus of Ohio State University at the North Turf Field and gets underway with the first game of the tournament starting at 10 a.m.
The Big Ten Tournament has not been kind to the Hoosiers, as they have posted a 2-7 overall record. The two wins came during the 2005 tournament when IU defeated Northwestern and Ohio State before falling to Michigan in the finals.
The Hoosiers traveled to Iowa City to take on the Hawkeyes on Sept. 30 and took the Hawkeyes to overtime before falling, 2-1. Katie Griswold scored the equilizer for the Hoosiers five minutes into the second half while Haley Exner made nine saves in goal for IU.
Since Indiana reinstated the field hockey program at the start of the 2000 season, Iowa holds a 6-2 advantage in the series. Indiana's last victory came last year, a 2-1 victory in Mellencamp Pavilion, as current senior Kate O'Connell scored both IU goals.
Sophomore Meg O'Connell has been carrying the Indiana offense over the past week, scoring two goals and recording an assist on her way to being named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week on Monday. Haley Exner made 20 saves in the Hoosiers' three games combined last week to help them to a 2-1 record and their first conference victory of the season over Northwestern on Sunday, Oct. 28.
A win by the Hoosiers against Iowa will give them a date in the semifinals against the winner of No. 2 seed Michigan State and No. 7 seed Northwestern on Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. Both semifinal games will be televised on the Big Ten Network with the first game starting at Noon.
The finals of the tournament will be played on Sunday, Nov. 4 at 1 p.m. and will be broadcast on CSTV.
