Nov. 5, 2013
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Freshman Hannah McDermott has been honored by the Big Ten by being named the conference Freshman of the Week, the league announced today.
McDermott, a native of Dublin, Ireland scored her first career goal in the Hoosiers game at Michigan this past weekend.
McDermott also added an assist for a total of three points for the game and had two shots, both on goal.
"This weekend was really a breakthrough performance for Hannah," IU head coach Amy Robertson said. "It was great to see her score her first career goal and she is peaking at a good time and contributing a lot to our team and program."
With the honor, McDermott becomes the fourth player in IU field hockey history to be named Big Ten Freshman of the Week. She joins Shareyna Chang (2009), Maggie Olson (2011) and Sydney Supica (2012) on the list.
McDermott was part of the All Ireland Championship team in 2012 and runner-up in 2011 and was the top goal scorer for the All Ireland Championships in both 2012 and 2011. She was also a member of the Irish U18 National Team Celtic Cup Championship squad.
McDermott and the Hoosiers travel to Columbus, Ohio this week for the Big Ten Tournament. Indiana plays Michigan State on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. in the opening round.
