Indiana Field Hockey Set for B1G Tournament

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana field hockey team will travel to Columbus this week as they begin play in the 2013 Big Ten Tournament. The Hoosiers, the No. 6 seed in the tournament will match up with No. 3 seed Michigan State in the opening round on Thursday at 2:30 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT
The Hoosiers traveled to Michigan for their regular season finale and dropped a 3-4 game. Neither team could score a goal in the first half, but the Hoosiers got out to a quick start in the second half and built a 3-1 lead on the Wolverines.
Michigan scored the final three goals in the game over the last 12 minutes of the second half to take the victory.
Junior Audra Heilman had one goal and one assist for the Hoosiers. Heilman tied the IU school record for assists in a season with 12 and moved into seventh on the career list for goals scored with 19.
SCOUTING MICHIGAN STATE
Michigan State comes into the game with a 9-9 overall record and 4-2 mark in Big Ten play. Most recently Michigan State beat Iowa on the road 4-3.
The Spartans are led by junior Abby Barker, who has scored 11 goals and ranks fifth in the conference in that category. Also in double digits for MSU is junior Allie Ahern with 10 goals.
LAST TIME VS MICHIGAN STATE
The Hoosiers Spartans played in Bloomington on Oct. 4 with Michigan State winning 4-3.
The Hoosiers were down 4-1 with 12 minutes remaining in the second half and scored two goals within a three minute span to cut the Spartan lead to one at 4-3.
MCDERMOTT B1G FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
Freshman Hannah McDermott was honored by the Big Ten on Nov. 5 as the Freshman of the Week. McDermott, a native of Dublin, Ireland, scored her first career goal and added an assist in the Hoosiers game at Michigan on Nov. 3. McDermott has five assists for the season.
LAST TIME IN B1G TOURNAMENT
Last year the Hoosiers came in as the No. 7 seed and knocked off No. 2 seed Northwestern 4-0 in the first round of the 2012 Big Ten Tournament in Iowa City.
Senior Mariella Grote had two goals in the game and was named to the All-Tournament Team. The Hoosiers lost in the semifinals to Michigan, 3-0. In 2009 the Hoosiers advanced to the championship game of the tournament.
