The Indiana University women's golf team opened the 2013 spring season with a 14th place finish at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic, held at the Rio Mar Country Club in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.
The Hoosiers shot a 317 on Tuesday to finish with a 54-hole score of 942 (314-311-317). Alabama won the tournament with a 13-stroke victory over Arkansas, tallying a score of 871. The Razorbacks followed at 884, with Texas Tech third (885), TCU fourth (895) and Iowa State fifth (896). Purdue was the top Big Ten finisher at seventh.
Graduate student Kristen Schelling made her way to the top of the IU leaderboard, finishing tied for 45th overall after posting a team-best round of 76 on Tuesday (79-77-76/232). Schelling matched her first-round birdie tally with two in the final round, including a two on the par-3 10th hole to go -1 over the final four holes.
Sophomore Elizabeth Tong tied for 59th with a score of 235 (76-78-81). Tong pared 12 of 18 holes on the day but was tripped up by a double bogey on 17 and a triple on five. Senior Kate Coons tied for 74th with a final round 83 (74-86-83/243). Coons started the round strong, sitting at -1 after three holes, but could not overcome three double bogeys down the stretch.
Senior Rosie Davies carded an 82 on Tuesday to finish tied for 80th (85-80-82/247). After a disqualification in the first round, freshman Marissa DeCola came back strong, including a 78 on Tuesday for a two-round total of 154 (0-76-78/154).
Indiana is back on the course Feb. 24-25 at The Westbrook Spring Invitational in Peoria, Ariz.
