Hoosiers in First at IU Fall Kickoff
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - With nine of the top 14 players wearing the Cream and Crimson, the Indiana women's golf team holds an eight-stroke lead over the field after 18 holes of the IU Fall Kickoff being held at the IU Golf Course in Bloomington.
The tournament concludes Sunday with 18 holes.
"With a lot of new faces we got off to a bit of a jittery start, but everyone calmed down to finish strong," said head coach Clint Wallman.
The 11-member IU squad is split into two teams, with the first group of Elizabeth Tong, Pamela Burneski, Marissa DeCola Kristen Schelling and Kate Coons in the top spot with a score of 298. The team of Sophie Hayashi, Rosie Davies, Maria Mancini, Eva Schoenwald and Kamryn Klawitter are second at 304.
IUPUI (306), Indiana State (315), Southern Indiana (321), DePauw (324), IPFW (339), Valparaiso (340), Franklin College (350) and a second squad from Southern Indiana (381) round out the field.
Tong sits in the lead after an even-par round of 72. Burneski is two strokes back alone in third place after tallying a 2-over 74. Kate Coons is tied for fourth with a 3-over 75. DeCola is tied for 12th with a 77, while Schelling is alone in 14th with a six-over 78.
In group two for the Hoosiers, Mancini leads the way in a tie for fourth with a 75. Davies is tied for eighth with a 76, along with Hayashi. Schoenwald is tied for 12th with a five-over 77, and Klawitter is tied for 18th with a first-round tally of 80.
Competing as an individual, Sarah Dusman is tied for 30th with an 83.
