The Indiana women's golf team got its 2012-13 season off to a strong start with a victory in the IU Fall Kickoff at the IU Golf Course in Bloomington, Ind.
The IU team of Elizabeth Tong, Pamela Burneski, Marissa DeCola Kristen Schelling and Kate Coons won the event with a score of 292 on Sunday to finish with a 14-over 590 over 36 holes. The Hoosiers' second group of Sophie Hayashi, Rosie Davies, Maria Mancini, Eva Schoenwald and Kamryn Klawitter posted a 294 on the day for the second-lowest score of the tournament at 598.
IUPUI finished with a 617, followed by Indiana State (625), Southern Indiana (642), DePauw (654), IPFW (667), Valparaiso (691) and Franklin College (692).
Tong maintained her lead from day one with a 1-over 73 on Sunday for a one-stroke victory over Burneski and Davies with a 145 (+1). Burneski and Davies were tied for second at 146, while Coons and Mancini tied for fourth (148). Burneski shot an even-par 72 on Sunday, while Davies led the field with a 2-under 70. Coons and Mancini both posted a 1-over 73.
Hayashi finished in eighth with a 2-over 74 on Sunday putting her at 150. DeCola and Schelling tied for ninth at 152, with Schelling tallying a 2-over 74 and DeCola and 3-over 75 in the final round.
Schoenwald finished alone in 13th with a 154 over two rounds, carding a 77 on Sunday. Klawitter tied for 18th as rounds of 80 on Saturday and Sunday gave her a 160 for the tourney.
Competing as an individual, Sarah Dusman tied for 29th, taking one stroke off her first round score with an 82 on Sunday for a two-round total of 165.
Indiana returns to action next Monday as it travels to Albuquerque, N.M. for the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational at the University of New Mexico.
