WOLCOTT, Colo. - The Indiana women's golf team sits in 17th place after round one of the 54-hole Golfweek Conference Challenge being held at Red Sky Golf Club in Wolcott, Colo.

The Hoosiers finished with a first-round tally of 333. Pepperdine leads the field with a 289, followed by TCU (301), Denver (303), UC Davis (304) and East Tennessee State (305) in the top five.

Action continues Tuesday with another 18 holes of play.

The Hoosiers had several factors playing against them as they tackle a course at a 7,600-foot elevation level. Today's weather saw temperatures hovering just above freezing, and Indiana was unable to get a practice round in on Sunday due to storms in the area making the course unplayable.

"I think our round today was really affected by not being familiar with the course," said head coach Clint Wallman. "We weren't sure where to hit and not to hit on certain holes and combine that with the fact we didn't execute well on some shots. Tomorrow we will have a better feel for the course and I expect that to make a difference in our scores."

Freshman Ana Sanjuan is currently the top Hoosier, tied for 44th with a score of 80. A pair of birdies highlighted Sanjuan's round, going one under on the par-5 fifth hole and the par-5 18th hole.

Junior Elizabeth Tong is two strokes behind with an 82, tied for 53rd. Tong had a fairly steady round with 10 holes of par but was undone by double bogeys on holes five and 15.

Sophomore Maria Mancini is tied for 66th with a tally of 84. Mancini started the round strong, including a birdie on the par-4 third hole, but was also hampered by compound errors with a triple bogey on six and a double bogey on 14.

Senior Sophie Hayashi is tied for 80th with a first-round score of 87. Despite a rough outing on the course, she did end the day on a high note with a birdie on the par-5 18th hole.

Rounding out the Hoosier lineup is junior Kamryn Klawitter who is 90th with a score of 94. It was a rocky start for Klawitter with double bogeys on four, five and six, along with a triple bogey on the par-4 eighth hole. Her struggles continued on the back nine with just one par coming on hole 16.
