Sept. 24, 2013
WOLCOTT, Colo. - Led by solid rounds from freshman Ana Sanjuan and sophomore Maria Mancini the Hoosiers climbed one spot to 16th after two rounds of the 54-hole Golfweek Conference Challenge at Red Sky Golf Club in Wolcott, Colo.
The Hoosiers cut 10 strokes off their first round score with a 323 to sit at 656 for two rounds.
Competition concludes Wednesday with the final 18 holes. Pepperdine remains in the lead at 585, followed by UC Davis (607), East Tennessee State (609), TCU (618) and Denver (618).
"We definitely saw an improvement out there which comes with familiarity with the course and better weather," said head coach Clint Wallman. "We are still having trouble with the greens but Ana played well and Maria really stepped up with her game. If we can make a few more putts we will be in good shape tomorrow."
Sanjuan and Mancini posted identical rounds of 5-over 77, placing Sanjuan tied for 31st (80-77/157) and Mancini tied for 51st (84-77/161). Sanjuan kept her score sheet free of double bogeys, posting par or better on 12 of 18 holes, including a birdie on the par-5 18th hole. Mancini had a pair of birdies on the day, going one under on the par-4 13th hole and the par-5 15th hole.
Junior Elizabeth Tong is tied for 62nd after a 12-over 84 on Tuesday (82-84/166). Tong had nine holes of par or better, with a birdie on 11, but carded double bogeys on four and 16, along with a triple bogey on eight.
Senior Sophie Hayashi is tied for 83rd after an 88 in round two (87-88/175). Hayashi had a slow start to her day, bogeying her first eight holes and finishing the first nine with a double bogey. She found a bit more footing over the final nine holes with four pars.
Junior Kamryn Klawitter is tied for 86th with a score of 179 (94-85). Klawitter's nine-stroke improvement in round two came with nine holes of par on the day.
