Women's Golf Opens Season with IU Fall Kickoff

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana University women's golf team opens the 2013-14 season on Sunday, Sept. 8 with the IU Fall Kickoff at Purgatory Golf Club in Noblesville, Ind.
The single-day, 36-hole tournament will play on the par-72, 6,331-yard course. Along with the Hoosiers, golfers from Notre Dame, Purdue, DePauw, Indiana State, Louisville, Youngstown State, Xavier, Cincinnati and IUPUI will participate in the event.
The Hoosiers will send eight golfers, led by junior Elizabeth Tong. Tong is already off to a strong start, carding a 65 during the team's qualifying rounds last week. Sophomore Marissa DeCola will play in the No. 2 spot, with freshman Ana Sanjuan third, sophomore Maria Mancini fourth and junior Kamryn Klawitter fifth. Sophie Hayashi, Sarah Dusman and Theresa-Ann Jedra will compete at individuals.
Tong, DeCola and Sanjuan were recently named by the Big Ten Conference as "Players to Watch" for the 2013-14 season.
This weekend's tournament is the start of a five-event fall slate for the Hoosiers. They will compete at the Mary Fossum Invitational Sept. 14-15 in East Lansing, Mich. before heading west to Vail, Colo. for the Golfweek Conference Challenge Sept. 23-25.
The final two events of the fall are the Hoosier Fall Invitational, Oct. 19-20 at Hickory Stick Golf Club in Greenwood, Ind., and the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown, Oct. 27-29. Indiana is the reigning champion at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown, with Tong the reigning individual champion.
