Golf Opens Season with IU Fall Kickoff
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana women's golf season gets underway this weekend as it plays host to eight teams for the IU Fall Kickoff, Sept. 8-9 at the IU Golf Course in Bloomington.
Joining the Hoosiers on the links is DePauw, Frankin College, Indiana State, IUPUI, Southern Indiana, Valparaiso, IFPW and Christian Brothers University. The tournament gets underway with 36 holes on a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. ET Saturday. The teams will play a final round of 18 holes on Sunday, also beginning at 8:30 a.m. ET.
All 11 Hoosiers will take part in the tournament, with the squad split up into two teams with one individual. Elizabeth Tong, Pamela Burneski, Marissa DeCola, Kristen Schelling and Kate Coons will make up the first group. Rosie Davies, Sophie Hayashi, Maria Mancini, Eva Schoenwald and Kamryn Klawitter comprise group two. Sarah Dusman will compete as an individual.
Davies returns for her senior season after tying for the team lead in stroke average last year with a 76.06. She posted three top-10 finishes in 2011-12, including a victory in the IU Fall Kickoff.
Tong is coming off a standout freshman season where she was third on the team in stroke average (77.20) and tallied a pair of top-10 finishes, including a tie for seventh at the IU Invitational. She was also the team's top finisher at the Lady Northern Intercollegiate (t-8th) and tied as the team's top finisher at the Big Ten Championships (t-40th). Both events were held on the Donald Ross Golf Course at the French Lick Resort.
Burneski enters her senior year hoping to bounce back from an injury-plagued season. She did come back to finish tied for 40th at the Big Ten Championships and tied for ninth at the IU Fall Kickoff last season.
Coons tallied three top-10 finishes as a junior last year, including a tie for first at the IU Invitational. She also posted the low round of the Big Ten Championships for the Hoosiers, tallying a 73 on the final day.
Hayashi finished tied for 14th at the IU Fall Kickoff last year, her top finish of the season. Klawitter also had her best showing of 2011-12 at the event, finishing tied for 31st.
Freshmen DeCola, Mancini, Schoenwald, sophomore Dusman and graduate student Schelling will all be competing in their first event as a Hoosier this weekend.
