Hoosiers Race in Day One of Clemson Invitational

CLEMSON, S.C. - The Indiana Rowing team competed in the first day of the 2013 Clemson Invitational on Lake Hartwell, Saturday, April 20.
The Hoosiers opened the morning session with the First Varsity 8 finishing in 6:51.4, beating Texas (5th, 6:51.7) by three tenths of a second and Rhode Island (6th, 6:54.9) by three seconds, to take fourth. The Second Varsity 8 also finished fourth with a time of 6:58.7, ahead of Texas (5th, 7:01.6) by three seconds and Rhode Island (6th, 7:04.3) by six seconds, and just nine seconds behind Michigan (3rd, 6:49.3). Indiana's First Varsity 4 took fifth with a time of 7:49.2, beating out Texas (6th, 7:50.0) by just under a second and narrowly missing Rhode Island (4th, 7:45.3) by four seconds. IU's First Novice 8 finished in fourth with a time of 7:08.9, while the Second Varsity 4 just missed beating Clemson (4th, 8:07.6) by two seconds to take fifth in 8:09.7 and the Third Varsity 4 took sixth in 8:28.8 to close out morning racing.
The First Novice 8 highlighted the afternoon session by narrowly missing Michigan State (1st, 6:53.3) by less than five seconds to take second in 6:58.0. The Hoosiers beat Louisville (3rd, 7:17.8) by 19 seconds. The Second Varsity 8 also had an exciting finish, beating Michigan State (5th, 6:41.7) by five tenths of a second to take fourth in 6:41.2. The Hoosiers also beat Rhode Island (6th, 6:55.6) by 14 seconds. In the First Varsity 4 race, Indiana took third with a time of 7:31.9, less than three seconds ahead of Tennessee (4th, 7:34.3), while also beating Rhode Island (5th, 7:35.5) by four seconds and Minnesota (6th, 7:36.7) by five seconds. The Hoosiers' win over the Gophers marked the first-ever for the V4. IU's Second Varsity 4 took fourth in 7:59.7 and the Third Varsity 4 finished in 8:09.2 for sixth.
Wrapping up afternoon racing in the First Varsity 8, the Hoosiers narrowly missed Tennessee (4th, 6:32.6) by three seconds and Rhode Island (5th, 6:34.9) by three tenths of a second to finish sixth in 6:35.2. Louisville took first in 6:22.0, while Minnesota finished second in 6:26.3 and Michigan State took third in 6:29.9.
