No. 13 Rowing Has Record Day at B1G Championships

INDIANAPOLIS - The No. 13 Indiana Rowing team had a record day at the 2014 Big Ten Championships, finishing fourth for the program's highest Big Ten finish in program history at Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis on Sunday, May 18. The Hoosiers also medaled in the First Varsity 8 and Second Varsity 8 races for the first time in program history.
IU finished fourth with a score of 103 points, just six point shy of No. 16 Wisconsin (109 points) in third. No. 2 Ohio State won the championship with a final score of 164 points and No. 9 Michigan took second with a score of 140 points. No. 20 Michigan State finished in fifth with 60 points, Minnesota finished in sixth with 55 points and Iowa took seventh with 39 points.
Junior Meradith Dickensheets was named a First Team All-Big Ten selection, while junior Karly Kikkert and freshman Alice Wright earned second team honors. Sophomore Caroline Comey was selected as IU's Sportsmanship Honoree.
Indiana's First Varsity 8 crew, seeded third heading into the championship, finished in third to take the bronze - IU's first in the 1V8 race. The Hoosiers crossed the finish line in 6:38.06, less than four seconds behind second-place Michigan (6:34.22), and four seconds ahead of the Badgers (6:42.31). The Hoosiers' 1V8 crew was made up of Karly Kikkert (coxswain), Alice Wright, Meradith Dickensheets, Madison Treser, Alexandra Morrison, Grace Mendel, Lindsey Barber, Olivia Gugliemotto, and Alexandra Eaton.
The Hoosiers' Second Varsity 8 crew, seeded third heading into the championship, also finished in third to take the bronze - IU's first in the 2V8 race. Indiana finished in 6:49.57, just five seconds behind the Wolverines (6:45.34) and two seconds ahead of Wisconsin (6:51.83). IU's 2V8 crew was made up of Nora Happ (coxswain), Danielle Rassi, Alessia Uhle, Spencer Manton, Hanna Henry, Kaitlyn Palmer, Aly Schmit, Caroline Comey and Kim Gilmour.
Indiana's First Varsity 4 took fifth with a time of 7:43.21, narrowly missing Michigan in fourth (7:39.41) by four seconds. The Second Varsity 4 finished fourth with a time 7:48.39, just getting edged out at the finish line by Wisconsin (7:47.48) by nearly one second. In the Third Varsity 4 race, the Hoosiers took fifth with a time of 8:18.69, beating Iowa (8:21.79) by three seconds and just missing the Badgers (8:17.75) at the finish line.
IU's Novice 8 crew also finished in fourth with a time of 7:13.96, beating Michigan State by nearly two seconds and narrowly missing third place by two seconds (Wisconsin, 7:11.84).
The Hoosiers will now await their NCAA Championship fate. The 2014 NCAA Rowing Championships Selection Show will take place Tuesday, May 20 at 5 p.m. ET on NCAA.com. The 2014 NCAA Rowing Championships will take place at Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis, May 30-June 1.
