IU Rowing Sweeps Dayton in Fall Scrimmage
Nov. 3, 2013
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana Rowing team wrapped up the home slate of its fall scrimmage schedule against Dayton on Saturday, Nov. 2, on Lake Lemon. Great weather greeted the Hoosiers as they took to the waters in their third scrimmage.
The teams faced off in a series of five, 5-minute pieces at controlled ratings. Indiana won all of the pieces, but it was more about the experience the rowers gained rather than the results that mattered most when everything was done.
"It was a great workout with Dayton and I think we can take away a lot of good things from it," said IU Rowing Head Coach Steve Peterson. "In a scrimmage like this, you aren't really keeping results like you normally would in racing. It is more about seeing how the student-athletes are rowing and executing in different race situations."
"We are an extremely young team this year and we have also been hit by the injury bug, so those two things have magnified the need to get our student-athletes as much experience as they can get," Peterson added. "Out of our top 16 rowers, 11 are either freshmen or sophomores. They are a very talented group, but I give a lot of credit to our seniors who have really stepped up and made it clear that it doesn't matter if we are experienced or not. This is who we are and we can be fast with the student-athletes we have. As with each scrimmage we have had, we have done some things well, and others where we need to improve. But the key has been we have gotten faster and faster each week."
Indiana will wrap up the fall schedule when its faces off against reigning NCAA National Champion Ohio State, in addition to Notre Dame and Michigan State, in Columbus on Saturday, Nov. 9.
"This will be a great test for us since Ohio State comes in as reigning NCAA champions, so it will really tell us where we stand at this point in the year," said Peterson.
